Jake Regan - Joint Security
At 50 years old, Jake Regan has spent his career working in security, from close protection of celebrities to working the doors at clubs and bars. But when joint pain threatened to bounce him out of work, Jake needed help to keep his job on track.
This is Jake’s story…
I’ve worked in security for the past 27 years. A big part of working in security is being seen as a deterrent because it helps prevent a lot of confrontations. I’m six-foot three and weigh sixteen stone, which makes me quite a big unit and is a key part of being seen as an imposing figure. It’s easy to misunderstand what we do in security; our primary objectives are to protect people. If an altercation takes place our aim is to protect ourselves but also to try to ensure the aggressor does not come to any unnecessary harm.
Sometimes in the job you have to put your body on the line. Particularly if the principal - the person we’re protecting - is a celebrity. Often our job is to get them from A to B safely, but as you can imagine there are people who want to get close to them - in which case we're going to stand and protect the principal and get them away from danger as quickly as possible; rather than standing and having a fist fight with someone, we're there to block and prevent. Meanwhile, in actual pub and club security, people sometimes get silly and don't always listen to reasonable requests. Then we do get involved in situations and have to restrain. So it isn't always pretty,
I’ve always been active. I do cardio like walking, swimming and cycling but also I spend a lot of time in the gym. I’m in the gym about 6 days a week doing weights, cardio and things like boxing. Mainly stuff that relates to my job. Staying fit and active is a big part of my job but it’s also something I really enjoy.
My joint pains first started in my 30s. As part of the job you get into scuffles and confrontations, you end up twisting things in ways you can’t avoid which leads to joint issues over a long career. Since then I’ve had four shoulder surgeries, two on each, and I've had two knee surgeries on the left and a hip shave. So yeah, I've had a lot of operations.
I was in a lot of pain. I tried things like Voltarol but it didn’t really do enough for me to justify using it. At the time I was dating a woman whose father was a pharmacist and he asked if I’d tried FlexiSEQ. I am someone who always looks for a more natural remedy where possible. FlexiSEQ really ticked a lot of boxes in that regard, and because it was being recommended to me by a pharmacist I had a lot of faith in, I thought I’d give it a go.
I felt the results of FlexiSEQ almost immediately. At first it felt really soothing on my shoulder joints and then I started to feel like it was really helping with the pain. I don’t need it every day at the moment; I use it when I need it or when I think I might. So, for example, I played Paddle yesterday - which is a cross between squash and tennis - and I applied FlexiSEQ on my knee because it was a bit achy and it took the pain away. In the past, after something like that my knee would be hurting the following day, but thanks to FlexiSEQ I’m pain-free this morning.
I really can’t recommend FlexiSEQ enough. Both my parents - who are 79 and 80 years old - are now using it because I told them about it. They’ve been prescribed other things by the doctor but they much prefer FlexiSEQ.
FlexiSEQ has really helped me lead the life I want, and to keep on doing the job I love.
