Sandra Hudson - Feeling Like New

Sandra Hudson has spent most of her life on her feet, on the go and always moving. But that began to change when an injury led to joint pain.

At 78 Sandra was looking to find time to relax, doing what she loves the most.

This is Sandra’s story…

I spent my life in all sorts of jobs, and from working in factories to domestic cleaning, I was always on my feet. I’m not the sort who could ever have a desk job - I like to be on the move too much.

I’ve got two children - a son and a daughter - and four grandsons. They’re all getting a bit older now, but there were years where they gave me the runaround a lot and I loved it. It’s much better having grandchildren than children, because you get to give them back at the end of the day!

I love to garden. I’ve got a lovely garden that is just the right size to keep me busy.

But then I had a nasty accident a couple of years ago. I was on holiday with my family, by the swimming pool with my grandsons, and I was walking past a slide when a child came whizzing down it. He knocked me off my feet and I fractured my tibia, my fibula and my ankle. It was a mess.

Before long I started getting joint pain in the knee of the leg I injured, and then the other knee started to cause me pain as well - all because of that initial injury.

Little things like getting off the sofa, going up and down stairs or even trying to walk came with terrible pain and stiffness. I really struggled to get out in the garden, and that had a big physical and mental impact on me. I’m someone who loves to walk and used to love playing football with my grandsons. Suddenly all the things I loved doing and made me who I am were taken away from me. It was awful.

Eventually the pain became bad enough that I went to the doctor who sent me for X-rays which confirmed I had osteoarthritis in both knees. The problem was I couldn’t take any traditional painkillers because I’m on blood thinners.
